The SB270 SOTAbeam has been designed to perform in the most difficult conditions. Building on years of experience from hundreds of users of the SB3, the SB270 has revolutionised VHF and UHF lightweight portable operating.
The "Full Kit" includes:
Our beam is supplied as a complete kit. You get a great performing beam that is optimised for lightweight portable. It comes with a mounting bracket, mast, feeder system and guying kit.
We also know that our beams face a tough life, operating outdoors in all manner of conditions, that's why we are happy to supply any spare parts you may need - try asking for spares for competing products and you may well be disappointed.
With the SB270 not only do you get a three element 2m beam but you get six elements on 70cm too! Explore a new band - typical hilltop ranges 150km+ (much more for summit-to-summit contacts).
Like the original SOTAbeam, all the elements fit inside the boom - yes, 2m and 70cm as well!
Easy and Fast Element Fixing Method The elements screw into the boom using a unique screw fix system designed especially for this application. Just twist to lock the elements in place "so easy it feels like cheating".
We even supply a storage container for the 70cm elements, in case you want to leave them at home. A four-guy system with new runners and new adjustable collar system. Easier and faster than ever before. ...but that's not all.
The new manufacturing process has allowed us to redesign the 2m beam achieving higher gain and a better front to back ratio than the original SOTA Beam.
Typical VSWR better than 1.5:1.
The SB270 is designed for use with SOTA Poles where it sits at about 4 metres above ground level. It will work with most types of telescopic "fishing pole" type aerial supports but may fix at a different height.
Please note that the SB270 requires limited self-assembly before first use (typically takes about 30 minutes).
Other portable beams used for portable operation may not quite so portable!
"I've been using a 7 ele ZL Special... for the 144MHz Backpackers. The 817 has two antenna sockets, and we get some weak continental beacons...so like-for-like testing was quite easy. First conclusions, ...was that the ZL Special couldn't be working properly. So this weekend we tried the SOTA up against a 9 element Tonna ...here was still barely an S-point in it, with the Tonna just winning. And as for putting up and taking down the SOTA beam against the Tonna - don't even ask!" Neil G4HUN
"Many thanks for the rapid despatch - my goodies arrived safely in the post this morning. All I can say is I am very impressed with the design, its implementation and the documentation." Ted G7BQM
"On the past two activations from [Rombalds Moor]I have really struggled to work anybody, but with the new SB270 I worked quite a few people! I am very pleased with the antenna, and it has got me interested in working on 70cms too!"
"I have a 144MHz MASPRO 5 element beam ...the performance of the SB270 is much better in all respects even though it has 2 elements less!"
Remember that the full SOTA Beam pack is a complete product (you get a beam, feeder, mast, mounting brackets and guying kit) - competing products are not supplied complete!
The SB270 has no wire elements to get caught on bushes/heather.
The SB270 elements pack into the boom giving a highly-portable antenna, just 1m long*.
The mounting brackets provide a convenient point of attachment for travel.
Special soft plastic end-caps hold the elements safely inside.
SOTApole is 1.15m long when collapsed.
The packed SB270 is 1m long. The elements store neatly within the boom for travel.

After a bit of self assembly (I am a novice and I managed it!) you have yourself a great portable 2m and 70cm beam.
The kit comes with everything you need to get set up, the pole is excellent, and the beam sits nicely on it, had some great results using this. Much much better than the branded antenna I have used. This will now be my only portable set up, you really dont need anything else, couple it with a Band Hopper II, as I did, and you have yourself a HF setup as well. It all packs down nicely as well.
Richard answered all my questions and has been a great help.

My initial enquiry to Richard at SOTAbeams, over four years ago, concerned using an SB270 for semi-permanent home QTH use. Richard replied completely honestly and stated that I should really consider purchasing an aluminium antenna that was designed for more permanent installations.
That's real honesty and true customer service! I bought an SB 270 from SOTAbeams anyway and used it for use at my home QTH supported on a 10m SotaPole. It was perfect for my initial and temporary VHF/UHF installation. Later I have used it for its intended purpose of of portable operating.
In both situations the SB270 performed excellently. Obviously the SB270 is designed for /P work and as such it really is perfect.
It really is feather light, but has proved to be both durable and a great performer over the time that I have owned it. I have found it very easy to assemble, the method of fixing the elements to the boom being really ingenious. The elements themselves are very good quality, as is the coaxial cable which is very best quality RG58 - important and VHF and UHF.
I have found this to be a first class product and always pleasing to use.
Highly recommended.

Beam arrived promptly.
First Impressions:
- Set up in no time, tested from living room.
- WoW Fantastic !
- SWR 1.1:1 on 2m and flatter than Kate Moss's Chest,
- Very directional, and
- excellent results from some local(ish) hams straight away !
Very pleased, great result and can't wait until I get it up the hills and attach it to my WASP special.
Will update you when I have my first expedition but all looking very promising.
