Amplifier and Enclosure Kit for LASERBEAM-DUAL Filter Modules (DSP module included) - (BOXA-DUAL)
Also available built:-  DSP Audio Filter Unit

The popular LASERBEAM-DUAL filters are ideal for incorporating into your own designs. However, for additional flexibility we have designed this great amplifier/enclosure kit which will allow your LASERBEAM-DUAL filter module (included) to be used with all your favourite radios. It has a professional look to compliment your shack.

The BOXA-DUAL kit consists of a PCB that the filter module (included) will plug into, together with an audio amplifier. The front panel features the CW Tuning LED (Sig) and Overload LED (Lvl) as well as a bandwidth switch (W/N) and volume control (Vol). The rear panel has 3.5 mm stereo sockets for audio in and out as well as a power socket for a DC supply (5-15 Volts).

As supplied, the board will drive headphones or a small loudspeaker. By changing two resistors, audio output can be increased up to 1.5 Watts which will drive loudspeaker. Because the filter module is a plug-in unit you can swap between different LASERBEAM-DUAL modules depending on your application.

The BOXA-DUAL enclosure has laser-cut gold-effect panels which screw into a rugged aluminium case. Power input is via 2.1 mm power socket (plug supplied).

The kit uses all through-hole components and is an easy build for a beginner. Build time about 40 minutes. Click here for instructions.

Note that the filter modules are bandpass filters only, so will not do anything about noise inside the passband. However, they should be very effective at eliminating noise and signals outside the passband. They will make the biggest difference to older or simpler radios that do not already have advanced DSP filtering on the audio output.

Optional Extras:

A 3.5 mm to 3.5 mm jack to jack lead might be handy

Cable for your power lead could be useful. Click here.

A 3.5mm mono to 3.5mm stereo adapter is required to connect speakers or headphones with a mono plug to this unit, which has a stereo output (plugging in a 3.5mm mono plug without an adapter will cause a short circuit and reduced audio output volume). Click here

If powering this filter from the same power supply as your radio, you may need a ground loop isolator. Click here.

Specifications:

Size: 85 x 63 x 30 mm

    Great kit for the LASERBEAM-DUAL

Posted by Peter VK3PF on 8th Jan 2017

I had purchased a LASERBEAM-DUAL SSB/CW module several months ago and had not done anything to case it up, other than some thinking. I purchased the amplifier/enclosure kit, which arrived in a reasonable time. The instructions were clear and easy to follow. I quickly had it all assembled and integrated. Worked great on the first try. The combination makes the FT-817 much easier to use.

    dual filter CW

Posted by Nico (F4EGX) on 17th Nov 2016

I purchased the kit and enclosure. I have not use the 10 way header socket, to save space. The DSP is direct on the board. I drilled the box to put a little 3cm loudspeaker inside, and now it's very fun. It's work very well! But I think R4 and R5 is on the wrong board side. It's more easy for try and experiment some configurations if R2-R3-R4-R5 are not under the sotabeam Filter, but at the bottom of board kit or outside the sotabeam filter area.

    Dual Filter Kit CW

Purchased to use with Rock-mite(s) which have wide open receiver. Great kit. Perfect for beginner to kit building. Great instructions online. FYI U.S. customers. Online orders work great. The shipping is a bit slow, but to be expected for the low cost and having to go international. I will buy from SOTA Beams again. 73s KB5PNI

    Dual Beam Filter Kit SSB

Posted by Dave Cain 2D0YLX on 26th Oct 2016

I'm not the best at soldering but even I found this kit one of the simplest and best laid out I have ever built. Instructions are clear and simple, and despite some of the components being on the small side (not as small as surface mount though) I managed to complete the build in around 40 minutes. The filter is excellent - does what it is supposed to do and it does it very well. I am so impressed that I have ordered another kit this time for the CW filter - this time for use on a different radio. I fully recommend the SotaBeam kits to anyone new to soldering, they are well laid out and everything fits. Some components are a little fiddly, but worth making the effort in the long run. I used a spring clip to help keep some components upright, and a small screwdriver to nudge things in the right direction but each to their own methods! Dave 2D0YLX

Makes the FT 817 usable on CW

Posted by David (2E0EML) on 14th Oct 2016

I purchased this kit recently at Hamfest 2016. As the other reviews say, the kit is very easy to assemble, just follow the instructions and it worked first time. Like others, I obtained this kit for my FT 817. Suddenly the radio is usable on CW. I especially like the tuning indicator LED. Find your station, then a flick of the toggle switch and its just you and your contact. This is good for your ears. Because of its ease of use, I find myself using it on all of my rigs. Great value for money.

Great CW filter for use with FT 817

Posted by Herb on 1st Sep 2016

As a retired US Navy Radioman I have some built in CW filters that generally work well but while using my FT -817, I found the stock filter just too wide and uncomfortable to use. As I work PSK 31 and JT 65 most of the time I simply gave up on using CW because of the cost of adding a dedicated Collins CW filter. When Richard introduced his filter I was excited and immediately ordered one to add to the FT 817. However, I neglected to ask how it would work out when I went to operate on PSK 31. The end result was, I did not put it into my FT 817 and then he offered the external filter kit. Boy am I glad I waited. The external filter is way beyond my expectations on CW. It performed as he said it would and I can now operate CW on the low end of 40 meters with great comfort. When I tried the filter, which was dead easy to put together, the band was full of CW and the old filters in my head just could not separate out what I wanted. I turned on DSP filter and presto, one station loud and clear with easy to copy CW. As I had expected to have to put up with ringing and a highly restricted audio bandwidth, it was a wonderful surprise to find it was just a great filter that worked very well. This will now become a permanent addition to both my home station and my travel kit. If you do not want to pay for the collins filter that is built into the FT-817, then this is the kit for you.

The perfect answer to an ugly problem!

Posted by Phill on 17th Aug 2016

When I purchased the excellent Laserbeam DSP filter a while back I did ask if a suitable enclosure was available, but unfortunately it was not. So I set about installing it in a small plastic box. Although it worked superbly the box and my attempts in fit everything resulted in an ugly mess, but thankfully Richard and his team have produced a very high quality enclosure with a small amplifier included - the perfect answer to my problem. The kit was very easy to assemble with very clear instructions including tips on altering the amplifier gain etc. This I will do as I use ear-buds. This is not a problem and very simple to do, however this is just for my ears, other users can choose what is comfortable for themselves. Once again a superb product from Richard.

    Excellent addition!

Posted by Mark Longson on 13th Aug 2016

Having purchased the sotabeams dual-bandwidth-filter-module. I was going to build it into a small tin enclosure. Having started the project off by fitting an LM386 audio amp and speaker, along with volume pot and 5V regulator I was ready to add my filter module, but for some reason I kept putting off finishing the project thinking it would not look very good. Well I no longer have to worry about that as Richard's Company has now produced a Kit called he Boxa-Dual board kit. This is a kit, that once built you plug your already purchased dsp-filter module into. The kit contains a lovely plated through pcb along with component silk screen overlay and all the necessary components. Along with the option of a lovely aluminium case which is pre laser etched and drilled. The kit is easy to assemble and can be built in about an hour or so. The beauty of this kit is it turns an excellent dsp filter module into a nice professional looking finished project Oh and the small pack of Golden Bears didnt last 5 mins ;-) Thanks Richard a lovely touch! I can highly recommend this kit and have done so on my Blog. Richard and his team are always there to offer advice and help should you run into problems with any of their products. Well done Richard and Team for yet another excellent product! 73/72 Mark GØNMY
