Three Associations Tour
The Summits on the Air award programme started here in the UK so it's a great place for all SOTA activators to experience! We take away all the stress of planning activations in the UK with this great opportunity to activate three associations (England G, Wales GW and Scotland GM) over a long weekend. We do all the hard work so you can relax and enjoy the fun!
Your guide will be Richard G3CWI who, together with John G3WGV, started the SOTA award programme back in 2002. Richard was one of the first people to achieve the prestigious "Mountain Goat" status and he was the first person to activate all the summits in England (G), Wales (GW) and the Isle of Man (GD).
Typical SOTA Tour itinerary
We collect you in our vehicle at about 10 o'clock from your hotel in central Manchester (or other local point to suit you) and drive you across to Wales (GW). There, depending on time and weather, we will activate either one or two summits.
Foel Fenlli is one summit that we might activate in Wales
After our activation(s) I will drop you at your hotel in Macclesfield for the night.
In the evening we will eat in the ancient market town of Macclesfield.
For the adventurous, we can schedule an evening activation of SOTA's most-activated summit "Cloud" G/SP-015.
We will head off north where we will cross the border into Scotland (GM) and activate our Scottish summit. We will celebrate your activation with a "wee dram" on the summit. Our accommodation will be near the famous Scottish border town of Gretna Green.
After breakfast we will go into Gretna Green for an hour - where there will be lots of opportunities to buy souvenirs. We will then set off south again back into England (G) where will will activate another one (or possibly two) summits. On the way back, we will stop off for an English pub lunch before dropping you back at your hotel in the centre of Manchester in the early evening.
After your adventure we will mail you a certificate to commemorate your achievements!
Hutton Roof Crags is a summit that we might activate on the way back
Your adventure will include two nights accommodation and transport from and back to central Manchester. Packed lunches and snacks with flasks of soup and/or hot drinks will be provided to enjoy on the hills. An experienced walker will accompany you to each summit.
Radio equipment and antennas will be available to hire if you do not wish to bring your own.
Manchester International Airport is served by direct flights from most parts of the World. Manchester is a fascinating city to visit with a wide range of accommodation. If you bring a "non-SOTA" partner, they will find plenty to do in an around Manchester if they don't want to join your SOTA Adventure. Manchester is well connected to the rest of the UK - including direct fast trains to London (just over 2 hours).
For your adventure you will need:
- a valid radio licence and any relevant permits to activate in the UK (we can help with advice on this)
- walking/hiking gear suitable for UK conditions (boots, warm clothing, waterproofs etc.)
Each tour will have places for up to four people. Accommodation will include breakfast. All the hills will be an easy walk - suitable for anyone able to walk over rough ground up to about 4 km (around 3 miles). This tour will be suitable for beginners as well as experts! The precise itinerary will depend on the weather conditions and group fitness. However, only the unlikely occurrence of gale force winds and or lightening, will force summits to be abandoned.
The price for the Three Associations Tour is £495 (approx. US $640) per person based on a shared twin room. Single occupancy rooms available (additional cost). Group discounts available for 2 - 4 persons.
Radio equipment hire from £30 (based on FT-817). KX2 available (extra cost). Antenna+mast hire from £20 - if you hire our antennas, we will erect them for you!
Other dates may be available on request.
NOTE: please do not book flights etc before confirming that we have places available for you.
