The Travel Mast: a compact lightweight telescopic mast

oval-small-7.4.png

***IMPORTANT NOTE: IF USING THIS MAST WITH A BAND HOPPER ANTENNA WE RECOMMEND ATTACHING THE ANTENNA NO HIGHER THAN 6 METRES (20FT) UP THE MAST (top of section 11 - counted from base/outer section)***

This is our 10m (32ft) Travel Mast. With a transport-length of only 67cm ( 26.5 inches ) it fits in a suitcase making it perfect for vacation DXing.

Note that this type of mast is quite flexible. To get the best performance out of it, guy it carefully. For use with horizontal antennas a maximum practical height for the antenna is 7 metres. The full height of the pole can be used for vertical antennas. If the pole is bending a lot, you have too much tension on it! The poles will break if bent too far.

As of mid July 2023, the threaded part of the mast base assembly is now made of metal, so the base cap should be at a much lower risk of breaking. However, we do still suggest putting some padding inside the base of the mast if you can find something suitable (such as a disc of foam rubber or similar), to cushion against damage if the mast collapses unexpectedly.

FAQ:

Spare parts are available - see below.

The mast is made of Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) = Fiberglass. This is an insulator with excellent RF properties (very low loss).

Friction lock: pull each section firmly with a twisting motion for best lock. When erecting always start with the smallest section. When taking down always start with the largest section.

Top sections may be removed by unscrewing the endcap at the bottom of the mast.

Guying Use our Multifunction Guying Kit Or build your own using the 34mm Guying collar and/or 22mm Guying Collar with Pegs and Hi-viz cord / stealth cord

For travel or domestic portable use, this is a great mast! Excellent quality fibreglass and it really does pack down small.

    10m Mast

Posted by Mike on 28th Jan 2015

Easy to put up and light to carry. We have put some toy stuffing in an old sock in the base to stop movement/rattling when transporting. Quite bendy in the wind so guying as suggested is reccomended.

    Multi purpose

Posted by Unknown on 8th Nov 2014

Just like other items form SotaBeams, this mast finds the right balance between weight and strength. It fits in a pack and seems strong enough to hold any antenna that I would be willing to carry to a hilltop. The 6 and 2 meter SotaBeams rest about halfway up the mast. That's not really a problem if you are on a mountaintop without any obstructions in the area. Flatlanders may want a mast that puts the beam a little higher. And, it works great with wire antennas as well. Vertical wires can be strung inside the mast. Dipoles, etc can be tied to the tip without fear of breaking it.

so good i have got two

    Posted by M6LDZ on 6th Nov 2014

i have run mine with the SB vertical antenna kit which is an ideal pairing. Contacts into europe with the KX3 20M, 10M on the first go. I have two to string a hyendfed 20m wire between them. These are so flexible (use wise) that you can bang up an antenna in no time at all and more importantly get some contacts. I guy it at 2 places which gives a quick and sturdy mast. Cant fault it.

    A Great 10m Travel Mast

Posted by Mervyn, G4KLE on 7th Oct 2014

I have now used this antenna with my KX3 /portable a couple of times with great results, I have included a 10m wire threaded up throu the mast so it is secured into the top section, then as I push up each sections I feed the wire up through the bottom of the mast, then its connected to a Balun at the base. This Mast is Light, tall and easy to erect. Straps nicelly to my Pack... so I have a complete "Shack in a Sack"

    Single-Handed Assembly

Posted by Mike, G3USC on 1st Oct 2014

Tried it out at a high point on Exmoor a few times (should I join MOTA or SOTA?), both a half-wave on 20m and a five-eighths on 15m, with excellent results. My method of erecting it was firstly to hammer a 1-metre earth rod securely into the ground, then to place a microphone stand (I'm into sound recording too!), the heavier and taller the better, beside it. Then I laid the mast on the ground with its bottom close to them; fitted the guy ring and, starting from the top, taped the antenna wire to the mast and raised it against the microphone stand and earth rod. It could then be lashed to them temporarily with a couple of cable ties while securing the guys. I managed this in quite a strong wind incidentally. For the 20m antenna, to avoid too much capacitive loading I believe that the earth rod should then be moved a metre or so away from the mast, since the antenna wire reaches almost to the ground. A five-eighths 15m wire end will be well clear of the ground rod, and for this assembly I added four quarter-wave radial elements as an elevated ground plane about 1-metre off the ground.

    Brilliant travel mast/service

Posted by Bill 2M0BZZ on 8th Jul 2014

I can't thank Richard G3CWI enough (well I will; by buying more kit from SOTABeams!). I stupidly burst the top 5 sections of the mast (my dog helped!) using the Band Hopper IV by over extending the mast and the guys were too tight - my fault entirely. Richard posted off replacements immediately FOC, save the postage. He even reduced that, upon realising my town was not the infamouse American namesake. Super quality product; matched by a super quality service, worthy of everyones support. SB - 'Bravo-Zulu'

    Good quality product

Posted by Mike on 1st Feb 2014

I recently took one of these masts with me to Barbados packed in a suitcase, along with a much cheaper 8m mast obtained from Ebay. There was absolutely no comparison between the two. The cheaper mast snapped on the first day (it does get quite windy at times on the Island) and the 10m travel mast was used thereafter with no problems whatsoever. If anything, it was a bit longer than I needed (used with a home made inverted V link dipole) but it is easy to remove some of the thinner sections if required. It is quite expensive, but it is a quality product with walls of decent thickness and I cannot fault it.

    Good Quality

Posted by WALTER G3HTX on 15th Jan 2014

WELL MADE EASY TO USE LIGHT, COMPACT AND EASILY PORTABLE I TRIED MY MAST TO ERECT A VERTICAL LONG WIRE ANTENNA BUT FOOLISHLY ONLY SECURED THE WIRE ON THE TOP THIN SECTION INSTEAD OF EXTRA FIXINGS LOWER DOWN TO SPREAD THE LOAD SO BREAKING THE TOP SECTION. WHEN I EMAILED RICHARD AT SOTABEAMS. HE WAS VERY SUPPORTIVE AND OFFERED TO SEND A REPLACEMENT PART FOR JUST THE CARRIAGE COST. NOT ONLY A GOOD PRODUCT BUT A GOOD COMPANY AS WELL. THOROUGHLY RECOMMENDED
